💙Wear Blue for Autism Awareness💙

    💙Wear Blue for           Autism Awareness💙

Happy Tuesday Academy Families! I hope that you all had a wonderful weekend with your Family. Our week is already off to a busy start here at The Academy of Westhaven! The littles have enjoyed Critter Painiting, and then today they did a Jumping Jelly Beans activity.

The month of April is Autism Awareness Month! We were so excited to help bring awareness by having all of our Teachers and Littles wear Blue. During the month of April, we continue our efforts to spread awareness, promote acceptance, and ignite change in our community! Over 3.5 million Americans live with Autism and 1 in 68 children have autism. “Autism isn’t a tragedy, ignorance is the tragedy.” It’s so important to see what Littles affected by Autism CAN do, instead of what they can’t. Watching them learn and break the boundaries. Autism might be life changing, but it’s not life defining. 💙

🌿☀️Nature Sun-Catchers!☀️🌿

🌿☀️Nature Sun-Catchers!☀️🌿

Happy Tuesday Academy of Westhaven Families! What a beautiful start to our week. The littles have LOVED all the extra time to have some fun in the sun. All of the trees have bloomed and the nature areas around us have all come to life this week which made for perfect timing for this week’s activity, Nature Sun-Catchers!

What a perfect sunny day for this activity! The classes each picked up so many cool leaves, flowers, herbs and other small pieces of nature that caught their eye. Once they were finished collecting all of their treasures they brought them inside to finish up the project! With the help of their teachers we removed the middle part of the paper plates. We then attached some nice sticky contact paper, and we were ready to go. Everyone had a different process as they were busy creating their masterpieces. Some tore their nature pieces up into little pieces while others left their nature items as big pieces. As they created their designs they also added or took pieces away as inspiration struck! All of the Littles created such colorful masterpieces, they couldn’t wait to hang them up in the window. I just love seeing the beautiful flowers and leaves preserved in our nature sun-catchers! It’s like we captured our beautiful day outside together too!

What are some of your favorite ways to use nature to make art with your littles?

🌸Classroom Flower Gardens🌸

🌸Classroom Flower Gardens🌸

Happy Tuesday Academy of Westhaven Families! I hope you all have had a great week and have gotten to enjoy this amazing weather. The littles are loving all the fun activities outside, and getting to see all of the flowers bloom.

This week we are doing all things SPRING! Yesterday we enjoyed Paper Plate Caterpillars, and then today we had so much fun planting our very own Classroom Flower Gardens! The littles got to learn all about the life cycle of flowers, what helps a flower to grow, and how flowers help our environment! Each classroom received all the materials they needed for their gardens, soil, flower pots and then they got to choose what seeds they wanted to plant in their classrooms. The littles all loved helping and getting messy in the soil! They all did such a wonderful job and we are all so excited to see all of the bright flowers grow throughout our school!

Why is it so important to let your little help out in the garden? Gardening with children provides them with skills to help your Little’s development. You and your children will enjoy every stage of the process, and the reward of seeing their flowers grow!
This is also great for their growing body management skills and  control skills as they move from one place to the other carrying tools, soil and water. Your little will love the sensory stimulation that they can experience in a garden. Water is a critical part of gardening and, if your child enjoys nothing else, playing with the hose or the watering can be a highlight. Feeling the texture of the soil or the plant leaves is also interesting for their growing development. Most of all, it will create long lasting memories for you and your family!

What are some of your favorite memories of gardening with your family?

🍀🌈Leprechaun Traps🌈🍀
🍀🌈Leprechaun Traps🌈🍀
Happy Tuesday Academy of Westhaven Families! It’s been another great week here at AOW. Our littles have been loving all things St. Patrick’s Day this week! We have been doing so many fun activities and crafts to get into the spirit.
On Monday we all made our very own Leprechaun Traps! It was a fun and
engaging way to get kids excited and involved with St. Patrick's Day! This activity got their creative juices flowing while also being a great learning experience. We talked with all of the littles about all there is to know about St. Patricks Day and Leprechauns. They got to thinking about how they will lure the leprechaun in and what type of trap they will set. We also looked up ideas of traps that have already been created to help us get inspired! They all worked together to make the perfect Leprechaun Trap so that they could catch their Leprechaun.
We are so excited to see if our traps are successful and if we can catch a Leprechaun! Check out the building process below.

🗞 Newspaper Art 🗞

Newspaper Art

Happy Tuesday Academy of Westhaven Families! I hope that you are all able to enjoy the wonderful spring-like weather that we have been having. We have been loving the extra outside time to be able to soak up the sunshine!

The littles have been loving learning about recycling this week, and learning about ways that we can Green our Scene! Today they enjoyed doing some Newspaper Art. We are so thankful for all of our amazing Academy families that donated recycled newspapers to use for the art project. Each classroom chose a different project that they wanted to use their recycled newspapers for, we had some create fun animals and collages while others decided to use the newspaper as a canvas to paint on. It was such a fun hands on way to show the littles how we can re-use all sorts of things around us for different purposes. Check out all the masterpieces below!

What are some fun ways that you re-use or recycle  items around your home?

📚 Read across America week!📚

“You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.”
📚Read across America week! 📚
Happy “Read across America week” Academy of Westhaven Families! We have been looking forward to this week for a while now and have so many fun activities planned for the littles..and teachers too!

This week we made sure it was extra special by hosting our Scholastic Book Fair, which the littles LOVE! We started out our week with fun One fish, Two fish snacks,  today was Bring in your favorite Dr. Seuss Book, we cannot wait to finish out this fun filled week with Dress up like your favorite Dr. Seuss Character!
Other than being filled with fun snacks and silly dress up days, Read Across America week is so much more.. Reading in general is fundamental in improving creativity. National Read Across America Day was established in 1998. The day coincides with the birthday of children's book author Dr. Seuss. The simple, yet important, purpose of the event is to celebrate reading and, to get children interested in it. You can celebrate the day by revisiting your favorite book, and sharing it with your little for the first time!

What is your favorite book that you remember reading as a child?

Spread a little KINDNESS

Spread a little KINDNESS

Happy Tuesday Academy of Westhaven families! I hope that you are all doing well and enjoyed a fun week in the snow! We are so happy to be back with all of our littles this week, and just love hearing their sweet laughter fill the hallways.

This week we are talking all about kindness, and how being kind to others is so important! We have all shared ways to be kind both at home and at school! The littles all made commitments of ways that they are going to be kind, being helping a friend put away a puzzle..or maybe even helping with a chore at home. It warms my heart to see how kind and big their hearts are. 💕

Did you know that being kind has even been proven to be good for your health? According to some studies acts of kindness is as good for your health as eating six or more serving of fruits and vegetables! There is something about just focusing on others that is really good for you. With that all in mind, surely we could all spread a little kindness. 💕

Check out some of our KIND littles below.
